Aquilaria malaccensis (commonly known as Agarwood, Malayan Agarwood, or locally in Assam as the Sanchi Tree) is a highly valuable aromatic tree species belonging to the Thymelaeaceae family. It is native to Northeast India (especially Assam) and Southeast Asia.
1. Botanical Description- Tree Structure: It is an evergreen, large tree that can grow up to 20 to 40 meters in height, with a trunk diameter reaching 1.5 to 2.5 meters.
- Trunk & Bark: The trunk is straight with smooth, light-grayish, highly fibrous bark. Historically in Assam, this bark was processed to make Sanchipat (traditional manuscript bark sheets).
- Leaves: The leaves are glossy dark green, elliptic to lanceolate, measuring 6–11 cm in length.
- Flowers & Fruit: It produces small, greenish-yellow flowers in umbels/clusters. The fruits are woody, capsule-like, and split open when mature.
